Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

The hypnotherapy services we offer will help in dealing with a wide range of issues. Specifically, hypnosis is used to change negative habits, overcome barriers to goals, and to build confidence and self-belief in any situation. We also use hypnotherapeutic techniques within personal and management development coaching, where this is appropriate and agreed with the client. Harvey Taylor has a certificate in hypnotherapy from the London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH). He is an affiliate member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH) and is currently studying for his diploma.

There are huge benefits in using hypnotherapeutic techniques, in both personal and business contexts.

Hypnotherapy is the great under-utilised business performance improvement tool! Just about every problem in business, which involves human beings, comes down to poorly conceived attitudes, limiting self-beliefs, ineffective and inefficient habits, and resistance to change.

So why do people adopt these attitudes and persist in behaviours that clearly do not work?!?

Well, contrary to what you might think, it is not because people are wilfully stupid or obstructive. Whatever they are doing right now, your people are actually doing the best they can, as human beings. If they are not performing, it is very often because they have not yet realised there are much better ways of getting what they want whilst also delivering the performance you require. The great unknown fact of all business and communication issues involving people is that exhorting them to try harder and putting pressure on them to perform simply does not work 99% of the time.

What DOES work is recognising the positive intentions behind the apparently dumb behaviours and then working with these positive intentions to find alternative ways of achieving mutually beneficial outcomes for employer and employee. And because most of what people think, feel and do, they do so unconsciously, it is at this unconscious level that any changes have to be made. That's why  business hypnotherapy works so fantastically well.

Unlike conscious methods involving carrots and sticks, business hypnotherapy frequently delivers sustainable improvement in just one or two sessions, saving you months or even years of frustration, time and money. Business hypnotherapy delivers enhanced performance that makes a direct contribution to your profitability, with immediate effect.

Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and the Myth of Stage Hypnosis

As there is some misunderstanding about hypnotherapy and hypnosis, we have sought to clarify the subject below.

Hypnosis

  • Hypnosis is the process of facilitating a trance.
  • Trance is an altered state of consciousness.
  • It has some similarities with sleep but it is not the same. Your body may experience some of the characteristics of sleep - changes or loss of physical sensations, for example. In trance, however, your mind remains active.
  • Awareness becomes very focused - on the voice of the hypnotist initially, and subsequently on your own internal world and experiencing.
  • Brain wave frequencies alter when in trance, slowing down, in a similar way to sleep, but with fewer and less marked fluctuations than in full sleep.
  • You can awaken at anytime should the need arise for you to do so (e.g. if a fire alarms goes off).
  • The role of the 'hypnotist' is simply to facilitate trance.
  • You have control over the process.

Hypnotherapy

  • Hypnotherapy utilises trance states to offer constructive suggestions to your unconscious mind.
  • People always wake up. You cannot get stuck in a trance.
  • In trance your unconscious mind becomes open to constructive, positive suggestions that will help you to achieve the outcomes you want to achieve.
  • You still retain free will.
  • Hypnotherapy works with your positive intentions and respects your individuality whilst enabling you to achieve improved personal performance.
  • Any suggestion that does not fit with your personal values or sense of personal well being will be rejected by your unconscious mind.

The first session is usually taken up with gathering more information and getting you used to the experience of trance. We may make some preliminary suggestions. The key thing is to work at the pace that suits you.

  • We will also teach you self-hypnosis so that you can get used to deepening your trance and quickly take over the process of suggestion after the first 2 or 3 sessions.

Stage Hypnosis

Contrary to what you may have witnessed in stage shows, people cannot be forced into doing things they do not want to do. People who volunteer to go on stage in hypnosis shows tend to be attention hungry extroverts who are ready and willing to comply with the bizarre suggestions given to them in the pursuit of entertainment. If that's you and you enjoy it, then have fun!  The illusion of 'compulsion', however, is just showmanship, exploiting people's desire for attention! There may be some loss of inhibition and the experience of hypnosis may be genuinely felt by the participants, but in reality, participants retain complete control of their free will. They eat raw onions and speak in alien tongues for our amusement, because they are willing to do so!

HBT does not use 'stage hypnosis' in any form.
