'You always hurt the one you love, the one you shouldn't hurt at all', or so it says in the song. But perhaps if we were more careful about our choice of 'lovers', and especially more careful about the poisoned tokens of love we give so freely, we wouldn't end up feeling like we have to hurt people so much. Turning on our partners because they have pursued the logic of our poisoned, self-interested 'love' to its obvious selfish conclusion is not only churlish; ultimately it is self-destructive. We ourselves become the object of our own loathing and all that is left is an endless cycle of death and destruction.

Many people think about New Year's resolutions on 31 December and some even act upon them, although, as we have discussed previously, an over reliance upon will power often leads to resistance and failure. But did you realise, you can start the New Year on any of the other 364 days throughout the year? And you can do it easily and comfortably, without even getting out of bed. In fact, I recommend you stay in bed to do it. And if, understandably, the first approach doesn't work, then DO NOT try harder! Simply adopt a different approach. I guarantee, before the year is out, you will have found the approach that works for you.

There are some days when the last thing you need to be thinking about is what you are going to think about. This newsletter is best read out loud to you, by someone else, in a soothing, calm, relaxed tone of voice, matching the pace of your breathing as you sit, or lie back in a nice relaxing position, perhapos in a bath or on your bed. If you can get them to throw in a massage at the same time, all the better. If you would like help, give me a call and I will come round and read to you along with the best masseuse in town, Sandra Hewson. Sandra works at the West Hants Tennis Club in Bournemouth, but we will travel, if the price is right!

The state of mind in which we approach the challenges that come our way is the main determinant of our level of success. A key determinant of our state of mind is the action we take to manage our state of mind. Taking action to get enough sleep, to be able to relax at will, and to be able to choose our state whatever circumstances present themselves, is the subject of this fascinating insight into the author's bathroom.

What secret desires and ambitions are you hiding behind that serene and inscrutable demeanour? Are you a frustrated megalomaniac, hemmed in by 'practicalities' or simply oppressed by your own inhibitions and mundane social niceties?Well here's your chance to break free. Take power and liberate the nation within! You don't have to be constrained by the date on this one. You can still send me your responses and I will publish them on this website (eventually). Are you really in control? Are you running a business, or a family and still entertaining the hopeless fantasy that you can ever gain control? Or maybe you are one of those who have given up in the full and certain knowledge that aliens are controlling our every move from space. Those of you that have employees and/or children will know what I mean when I say that 'control' is a myth; a dangerous illusion that invariably leads to a complete loss of control. In this modern day tale of misplaced belief and fantasy, we explore the control myth and come to a simple and obvious conclusion: the less you seek to control, the more influence you achieve.

The 80/20 Principle was discovered by Pareto in the 19th Century and popularised by Richard Koch in his book of the same name. You can apply it to pretty much any aspect of business, work and life in general. For example, 80% of the women walking past my window are beautiful whereas only 20% of the men fit into this same category (but if you were sitting here you might see this the other way around, depending on your personal proclivities). This week's newsletter provides a simple exercise in applying the 80/20 principle.

Not everything is as it seems. Human beings live on their own, individual planets. Some of us even have entire universes inside our heads! This is great fun but it can also cause problems. If you emply people, have children, or simply get out of bed occasionally, and engage with human beings in any capacity, any day of the week, you will have some sense of what I am talking about. The problem is that, when people start taking their own reality more seriously than external reality, life and work can become fraught with misunderstandings and missed opportunities. This newsletter is all about how this process actually works and how to turn it your advantage.

It doesn't matter if you are an individual doing battle with the flab, giving up smoking, or an entrepreneur fighting to stay afloat in the market place, the whole 'doing battle' process is nearly always a huge waste of time and effort. In this seminal newsletter, HBT managing director, Harvey Taylor, reveals the truth about why 'will power' doesn't work and how to overcome barriers and achieve positive outcomes easily and comfortably (with a few setbacks on the way!)

Values are a key business issue as well as being the core of who we are as individuals. Businesses which have clearly defined values and consistently refresh and reinforce these values are more lilely to retain customers, inspire coimmitment from their employees and add real value for everybody. On a personal level, values are the filter through which we test out reality and make important decisions that affect ourselves and the ones we love. |
